, is an extensive book on the art of sleight of manus published in 1902 by Southward. West. Erdnase, a pseudonymous author whose identity has remained a mystery for over a century.[ane]
As a detailed manual of card sharps, the book is considered to exist 1 of the most influential works on magic or conjuring with cards.

In August 2020, mnemonic creative person David Trustman adapted The Expert at the Card Table into a graphic novel, incorporating the one-time effigy drawings and calculation new ones to assist explain some of the sleights. Description of the volume


Despite his widespread influence on the magician community, the writer’due south identity remains an unsolved mystery. Many believe his existent proper name was E.S. Andrews (S.W. Erdnase spelled backwards). (See Gardner’due south Foreword, pp. vii-ix.)[2]
Another theory is that the writer is Wilbur Due east. Sanders, son of Senator Wilbur F. Sanders. W.Due east. Sanders is an anagram of Due south. W. Erdnase, and Sanders had the education, knowledge of magic, and familiarity with gambling necessary to write the volume.[4]

Originally the writer started selling the volume for $ii.00 in 1902 and the next yr it dropped to $1.00. Although the author did not renew the copyright, the book has remained in print since 1902, albeit pocket-size individual printings on occasion.[5]
The influence of this volume is such that it has been issued in annotated grade;[half-dozen]
translated into Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian;[5]
