Modding has been a huge part of the Grand Theft Automobile games on PC ever since Grand Theft Auto Three debuted a then-new 3D engine and a much larger world. Because Rockstar doesn’t provide whatever kind of formal editing tools, however, the end-user community took information technology upon themselves to create the necessary software.
One of the nigh pop editing suites used in GTA V was a program chosen OpenIV, which supported database manipulation and could be used to create a vast range of gameplay changes, effects, and content swaps. If you’ve ever seen videos of the popular Vehicle Cannon modern, you’ve got some idea of how zany some GTA V modders are (and to be fair, it looks hilarious).
OpenIV has been indispensable to the larger modding community, which why Accept-Two’southward recent cease-and-desist order confronting the modernistic has sent players into revolt. The makers of OpenIV announced earlier this week that they had received an order from Take-Two’s lawyers telling them to cease and desist from distributing their piece of work. By extension, the hundreds of mods that relied on OpenIV are no longer functional, either. Take-Ii claims that the entire upshot is not because they are against modding, but supposedly because OpenIV interferes with Thousand Theft Auto Online. The company released a statement, maxim:
Take-Two’s actions were not specifically targeting unmarried role player mods. Unfortunately OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody. Nosotros are working to figure out how we tin go along to support the artistic customs without negatively impacting our players.
This explanation hasn’t fix well with many modders, who accept noted that OpenIV was strictly a single-thespian modernistic system. There’southward supposedly no evidence that OpenIV interfered with GTA Online, which hasn’t really seemed to demand any help from modders when it comes to beingness a rampant hellhole of cheats and hacks.
Few would argue Take-2 doesn’t have the right to command its games and the modding situation in any way information technology pleases. But Rockstar has previously been supportive of the modding community, and this C&D clearly pissed off a lot of long-term players. Mod communities tend to go on a game alive and in the public heart much longer than it might otherwise be, and this very much includes GTA V. Non all mods are banned (trainers notwithstanding work in single player), just OpenIV’s forcefulness was its power to manage hundreds of mods at once.
PCGamer notes that modding fans have taken to Steam to vent their disapproval; only 21 percent of the 23,000 reviews left for GTA Five in the past 30 days are positive. OpenIV was also used to produce machinimas based in GTA V, since it immune for camera controls non implemented in the included game. Mods like LSPDFR, which transform GTA Five into a law enforcement simulator, required OpenIV. The software yet works if you already downloaded it, but can’t be downloaded anymore.
